BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker touched by achievement as he confirms departure date ahead of Channel 5 move UK News

Dan Walker has admitted he’s been touched by a big wake-up call, as he confirmed when he last appeared on BBC Breakfast, after announcing he would be moving to Channel 5.

It was last month that former Football Focus host Dan announced he would be leaving the red sofa Breakfast to take a surprise move to another broadcaster. In a video shared on Twitter, he said: “”I’m really excited but this has also been a huge decision for me because I love BBC Breakfast, I love working alongside Sally (Nugent) and I love the team there. But Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often and I can’t wait.”

Dan will step into the Channel 5 News post held by another former BBC presenter, Sian Williams. On replacing her, he said: “I know how popular she is with the team and the public, so all I can say is that I will do my best to maintain her high standards.”

After speculating when Dan will follow former co-host Louise Minchin off BBC Breakfast, Dan finally came clean on Tuesday morning, telling current colleague Sally that he would bid farewell on Tuesday, May 17, to which Sally replied. “It’s not maybe left shifts, is it? It’s not a lot of early warning calls.” Dan said, “Another six to three o’clock and I’m off!”

Addressing the reaction to the news that he is leaving BBC Breakfast, Dan added: “The other thing to say is thank you to everyone who sent so many lovely messages. One thing I’ve realized is that many people tell you about this program because it means a lot to a lot of people.”

He added: ‘It reminded me how special this show is and how much everyone watching it loves it’, to which Sally told him: ‘You have been a big part of the lives of people for the past six years, every morning.”
