The Queen beams as the View makes a surprise visit to Crossrail’s Elizabeth Line UK News

The Queen made a surprise appearance at Paddington Station to see the completed Elizabeth Line, which bears her name.

The 96-year-old now rarely performs public engagements outside her royal residence, but was joined by her youngest son, the Earl of Wessex, for the official visit on Tuesday.

Dressed in a sunshine yellow outfit, the Queen arrived at 11:32 a.m., cautiously stepping out of the see-through elevator while clutching a cane.

The visit comes just two weeks before its Platinum Jubilee celebration weekend.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: “In a happy development, Her Majesty The Queen is attending today’s event to mark the completion of the Elizabeth Line.

“Her Majesty was aware of the engagement and the organizers have been advised of the possibility that she may attend.”

The visit comes just days after she gathered to head to the Windsor Horse Show on Friday and Sunday as guest of honor at the A Gallop Through History equestrian extravaganza near Windsor, the first major event in the Jubilee celebrations.

Tuesday’s engagement is the Queen’s first outside the Windsor area since she attended the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service at Westminster Abbey seven weeks ago.

The Queen and Prince Edward were greeted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan as well as London Transport Commissioner Andy Byford.

The group met the staff who played a key role in the project and who run the railway, including train drivers, station staff and apprentices.

The Elizabeth Line, named for the Queen, will open to passengers on May 24.
