“In these regions we could see gusts frequently between 50-60mph and even up to 80mph in exposed coastal locations.

“As the storm starts to move away on Monday morning very strong winds will also develop in the far southeast of England, bringing the risk of 70-80mph gusts here too in the early hours of Monday morning.

“Storm Isha will bring a disruptive spell of weather to the UK with strong winds across the whole country.

Is TfL introducing ‘dynamic pricing’ on to the Tube? UK News

It comes as the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, shared that ‘dynamic pricing’ could be introduced as Transport for London (TfL) has been considering the idea.

Khan shared that the change in fares would be to encourage more people to use the London transport system following the decline since the pandemic.

However, the Mayor added that there may not be enough time to introduce dynamic pricing ahead of the annual fare increase.

National rail fare will rise by 4.9% from March 3, whilst TfL fare rise for 2024 is expected to be confirmed soon, it’s understood that London transport costs will increase to 4%, according to The Standard.

Will TfL be introducing dynamic pricing to the Tube?

Currently, travellers on the Tube have to pay peak fare prices from 6.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 7pm on weekdays.

Sadiq Khan was previously asked by Lib-Dem member of the London Assembly, Caroline Pidgeon, about the potential use of dynamic pricing, as the Mayor responded: “Those are some of the options that TfL are looking into.

“I have not made a decision in relation to what is doable in the short period of time we have got.

“We are getting numbers back but you are right to look into the question of times of day, parts of London and so forth.”

Khan added that the budget committee was looking into peak and off-peak prices, however, some have shared that while Tube fares could increase, London buses should remain low.

Passenger watchdog London TravelWatch shared with The Standard that keeping bus fares low should be a priority after TfL previously increased bus fares by 10p: “If TfL does match the national rail fares hike, we believe it’s very important that bus fares are kept as low as possible (even if some other modes are increased).

“That’s because more people use the bus every day in London than any other type of transport, and they’re most used by lower-income Londoners.

“Further price hikes would not be fair and might deter people from using public transport.”

Great London parks and walks get National Lottery nature cash UK News

They include four major London schemes at the historic Highgate Cemetery and Broomfield Park in north London, a “green chain” of ponds along the southbank from Lambeth to Bexley and opening public access to the Roding River in east London.

The Friends of Highgate Cemetery Trust get £105,700 towards a £6.7 million grant to conserve heritage, promote biodiversity and improve public access to this Grade I-registered site.

The historic burial grounds at Swain’s Lane in Highgate Village, where Karl Marx is famously buried, continues as working cemetery while remaining as a sanctuary for the public to “connect with nature and reflect on life for generations to come”.

Enfield Council is earmarked to get £3.7 million to establish Southgate’s Broomfield Park as a flagship open place to inspire sustainable living, with opportunities for communities to take part in its upkeep.

Another project is the new ‘London Blue Chain’ along the South Bank. Froglife wildlife charity gets £573,000 to restore freshwater habitats that encourages sustained growth of amphibian and reptile populations across south London.

The new chain of 100 ponds will run along the historic 52-mile ‘London Green Chain’ walking route, linking open spaces in Lambeth, Southwark, Bermondsey, Greenwich, Woolwich and out to Bexley. This creates wildlife corridors in housing estates, schools and allotments, with volunteering, workshops and even festivals in the pipeline.

The ‘Roding Rises’ project is set to get £1.5 million to connect areas along the banks of the Roding river. It also opens the Essex countryside to communities in Clayhall, Woodford, Redbridge, Ilford, Manor Park, East Ham, Barking and Beckton, while encouraging them to help restore this neglected river.

Funding is also allocated to greenspaces elsewhere across the UK, such a ‘Garden Fit For a King’ to restore Brighton’s historic Royal Pavilion’s unique Regency garden and the Heritage Museum at St Andrew’s, north of Edinburgh, to improve public access.

Four other projects getting Lottery Heritage cash are the Peak District, North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks and new walking trails in Belfast.

The Heritage Fund has awarded £2  billion since 1994 to 4,700 nature schemes, thanks to National Lottery players whose money is helping the conservation of Britain’s unique landscapes and biodiversity.

Lily Mills to compete in Australian Open tennis championship UK News

Tennis star Lily Mills was given the cash by Islington Council after qualifying for the grand slam tournament’s ‘Persons with Intellectual Impairments’ championships.

The 23-year-old athlete, who trains at the Islington tennis centre in Holloway, is one of eight contenders in the women’s three-day championships at Melbourne, starting on January 26.

Lily was diagnosed as a baby with meningitis and septicaemia, as well as the rare condition galactosemia, which occurs in just one in 45,000 people.

These early complications left her with cognitive impairments such as learning disabilities, short-term memory loss, poor coordination and a tremor.

But her passion for tennis overcame co-ordination problems, having first picked up a tennis racket when she was just five.

She has since amassed trophies and medals at regional, national and international levels.

So the council decided to support her fundraiser when they heard her story and agreed to help pay for the trip for the Australian championships.

“This has made Lily’s dream a reality,” her mother Tallulah Bayley said. “The opportunity means the world to her. We are overjoyed to be heading to Melbourne and are grateful to the tennis community which has rallied round Lily to make this possible.”

Lily’s dedication is seen by the local authority as sport being used to promote inclusivity in line with its own leisure department’s mission, so it has picked up the tabs to support Lily on her “remarkable journey”.

Cllr Nurullah Turan, executive member for social care on Islington Council, said: “Lily’s journey stands as a symbol of inclusivity in sports.

“We were inspired by her commitment to tennis when we heard her story as we are determined to create a more equal society where everyone can enjoy the mental, physical and social benefits of staying active.”

The ‘All Abilities’ championships recognise those with disabilities such as vision, hearing, mobility, sensory and intellectual to take part in the Australian Open in a secure environment. They share the same hallowed courts with starts like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber.

Some 40 players from 14 countries competed at the first event last year alongside the world’s top players in the Australian Open Grand Slam.

Additionally, operators are not offering sale tickets on days where their services might be impacted by the strikes announced by ASLEF on 15 and 18 January 2024.

The first Great British Rail Sale in 2022 saw passengers save around £7m on rail tickets and encouraged around 70,000 adults who hadn’t travelled by train since the pandemic to take a trip, the Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT) estimated.

The Government and industry are therefore launching a second Great British Rail Sale to save passengers money and get more people using the UK’s railways.

Conservatives win Hackney Council Cazenove ward by-election UK News

Ian Sharer received 1,623 votes in the Cazenove ward vote on a turnout of 32%, gaining the Tories a seat won by Labour at the local elections two years ago.

Labour had initially hoped to replace councillor Caroline Woodley, who is now elected mayor, with its candidate Laura Pascal.

The party suspended Pascal less than a week before the poll took place on January 18, after accusations on social media that she had made “anti-trans” remarks, but reinstated her hours before voting began.

Pascal ultimately received the second highest vote tally, with the Green party’s Tamara Micner and Liberal Democrat Dave Raval finishing in third and fourth respectively.

In an exchange with another user on X that began on July 29 last year, Pascal claimed that “by definition” trans women are male.

But after being reinstated by the Labour party, Ms Pascal said: “I offer a heartfelt apology to the people of Cazenove ward, Hackney and anyone who has been offended by my social media activity, which fell well below the standard expected of someone seeking election to public office.

“It was a mistake to like some tweets that caused offence and a great deal of hurt.

“Ultimately, the people of Cazenove ward will make their own judgements on Thursday, but I hope they can find some reassurance in the fact that I have reflected deeply on my past social media activity and offer this apology unreservedly.”

Following the announcement of Cllr Sharer’s victory in the early hours of this morning (January 19), Hackney Conservatives said they were “delighted” to welcome him as the new councillor for Cazenove.

They added: “Thank you to the residents of Cazenove ward for this historic victory.

“We are honoured to be representing all our communities and will continue to oppose the rollout of LTNs.”

Full results

Here is a breakdown of who voters in Cazenove cast their ballots for in the order they appeared on voting slips:

  • Tamara Micner – Green party – 387
  • Laura Pascal – Labour Party – 935
  • Dave Raval – Liberal Democrat – 73
  • Ian Sharer – Conservative and Unionist Party – 1,623 – ELECTED

Haringey to double council tax on empty properties UK News

With 1,000 homes in the borough currently standing vacant, Haringey Council’s cabinet has voted to charge 200 per cent on properties left empty for just 12 months  — reduced from the current rule of two years — as a stick to bring them back into use.

“We are determined to turn empty dwellings into homes,” Cllr Dana Carlin warned. “London is in the grip of a housing crisis. Bringing unoccupied homes into use is part of the solution.”

There are an estimated 34,000 long-term empty homes across London, more than half the number of homeless families in temporary accommodation, while Haringey gets 4,400 applications a year from people who are homeless.

“Empty properties drive up the cost of renting,” Cllr Carlin added. “Affordable homes are in short supply so it’s fair that those who keep properties empty should contribute to preventing homelessness — or maybe find socially-responsible ways to provide income.”

The tough council tax charge would apply from April 1 on long-term empty properties.

There are also plans for a new double tax on furnished ‘second homes’ and holiday lets for the times they are left vacant, to be levied from April 2025.

Both measures follow changes in legislation after pressure on the Government from many local authorities for more powers to help tackle the housing crisis.

There are currently 1,028 properties that Haringey says have been empty for between 12 months and five years, according to its calculations. The council claims the premium could raise an extra £900,000 a year for the town hall coffers.

Another 1,067 properties are registered as fully furnished second homes, including 479 with no-one living in them for more than a year.

High inflation pushing up the cost-of-living is blamed for more people facing homelessness.

The sweeping measures will also help towards services hit by cuts in the council’s budget. Core government funding for Haringey is estimated to be £143m less a year in real terms than it was in 2010.
