‘Remarkable’ Durdle Door named one of the best beaches in the UK Bath City News

A ‘remarkable’ corner of the West Country has been hailed as one of the best beaches in the UK by a New York-based magazine. Durdle Door, famous for its arch, was chosen as the highest point on the South West Coast Trail.

The list of 18 UK beaches was compiled by Travel + Leisure, a New York-based magazine and website. The best beaches were not ranked, but the article used a photo of Durdle Door in Dorset as the main image.

Describing Durdle Door on the Jurassic Coast, writer Luke Abrahams said: ‘This is one of the most famous beaches in the UK, if not the world, thanks to a century of guidebooks and social media stardom . Crowned by a dramatic arch – nicknamed the Durdle Gate – it’s a truly remarkable corner of the South West Coast Path. Most associate a visit here with a walk around nearby Lulworth Cove, but this place is so breathtaking that we wouldn’t blame you for staying put.”

Other UK beaches praised by the article had links to TV and film locations, Dorset Live reported. They included Holkham Beach in Norfolk, where ‘Gwyneth Paltrow frolicked in Shakespeare in Love’; Bamburgh Beach in Northumberland, the county which was “the backdrop for much of the Harry Potter film franchise”; and Compton Bay on the Isle of Wight which he said was “England’s actual answer to Jurassic Park”. The writer also included Whitby Sands in North Yorkshire, highlighting it as the setting for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The list also highlighted Kynance Cove and Porthcurno Beach in Cornwall, Pentle Bay on Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, Whitstable Beach in Kent, Hunstanton Beach in Norfolk, Cuckmere Haven and Camber Sands in East Sussex and Druridge Bay in the Northumberland. Top beaches elsewhere in the UK included Oxwich Bay Beach, Llanddwyn and Three Cliffs Bay in Wales, Scarista Beach in Scotland and Whitepark Bay in Northern Ireland.
