Skillfully crafted roots music seems to be enjoying something of a resurgence right now, especially across the pond in the United States of America.
Most of the artists featured here are unlikely to become household names, but open-minded listeners should find their largely acoustic musical exploits highly rewarding.
These ten CDs cover a wide range of musical creations, from the evocative flights of The Ciderhouse Rebellion to the rampant eclecticism of Maartin Allcock and Green Diesel’s classic take on the electric folk-rock sound that first flourished. in the early seventies.

7. The Matthews Baartmans Plot (Talking Elephant)
Iain Matthews’ latest collaboration with Dutch multi-instrumentalist BJ Baartmans is generously sprinkled with mature and thoughtful gems.
8. Maartin Allcock (talking elephant)
Interesting and eclectic solo offering from former Fairport and Jethro Tull stalwart with guest appearances from Ian Anderson and Tull’s Clive Bunker.
9. Mark Harrison (self-published)
Outstanding double CD of folk-blues Mark Harrison with reflections on the human condition backed by bassist Charles Benfield and ace of percussion Ben Welburn.
10. David Ferguson (Fat Possum Records)
Nashville veteran sound engineer Ferguson is a solo performer for the first time, tackling covers of some of his favorite songs.
