The new tricycle has flair to spare. It’s also clever. It’s a true unibody, as many components as possible have received more than one job, there’s no ash frame under the stressed aluminum body panels and it even features Morgan’s first patented item in its 112 years of history (a clever montage clip btw).
In my engineer’s eyes, it’s a wonderful piece of product design, born not from thinking about making a traditional three-wheeler, but about making a super adventure trike. On a throwback machine, you wouldn’t find, for example, chunky aluminum castings at each front corner, like here. These large sculpted parts are both engine mounts, drawbar suspension mounting points, headlight and front bonnet mounts and, finished in silver or black, also elegant body surfaces. They’re delicate yet strong as if from a locomotive, cool to the touch, visually appealing and, last but not least, aerodynamically sculpted to direct air into the radiators.
There is more. Adjacent blocky side panels divert air to the radiators and serve as mounting points for the vast array of luggage you can now spec (because Morgan knows accessories can be cost-effective, too). They are flat because if shaped the front wheels would not be able to turn as far. The old 3 Wheeler had a terrible turning radius.
The spoked wheels did not help his cause. They have a great classic look, but their hubs are so wide that they push the suspension uprights inward, increasing the turning radius and compromising the dynamic setup.Morgan’s designers love the look of turbofan wheels (who doesn’t?), so they designed some new ones. They have the advantage of being slightly convex without appearing so. So now the wheel post is closer to the center of the wheel and the wheel is proud of the custom tire (but disguises it well).
