The new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 6 will be officially unveiled next week Car News

The highly anticipated Hyundai Ioniq 6 – the Korean firm’s strikingly styled answer to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 – will roll off the cover in a few days.

The second Hyundai model to use the E-GMP modular skateboard architecture, the Ioniq 6 is described as an “electrified aerodynamic” in reference to its monolithic, curved silhouette – previewed in 2020 by the racy concept Prophecy – which focused on aerodynamics. Efficiency.

Hyundai has yet to give a full reveal date, but says it will show exterior and interior designs for the new sedan later this month. A new official sketch suggests the Prophecy ethos survives in production, albeit with a number of changes aimed at improving usability and practicality.

Hyundai design boss SangYup Lee recently told Autocar that the final design had been approved, following reports late last year that a redesign of the model had been ordered.

Lee did not comment on the reports, but said of the car: “The Ioniq 6 is in the spirit of Prophecy. The car grows because of the skateboard platform. And the design maximizes interior space. There are also a lot of aerodynamic improvements on the car. It’s been done for a long time. »

In September, the Korean Economic Daily reported that the launch of the Ioniq 6 had been pushed back to mid-2022 to allow the body to be lengthened by 20mm, bumpers and lights to be redesigned, and the battery to be upgraded from 72.6kWh to 77.4kWh.

The supposedly late launch of the EV has also been blamed on a delayed overhaul at the Asan plant where it will be produced. This site is currently building the combustion engine Sonata sedan and is to be redeveloped to build cars based on the E-GMP platform.
