PRINCE William criticized the BBC for its failures around his mother’s interview with Panorama, which he said led to “fear, paranoia and isolation” in the last years of his life.
The Duke of Cambridge said he was left with “indescribable sadness” after learning that the BBC’s shortcomings “contributed significantly” to Princess Diana’s state of mind.
“It was failed not only by a rogue journalist, but by BBC executives who looked away rather than asking the tough questions,” the Duke said.
An investigation found that the BBC covered up “deceptive behavior” used by journalist Martin Bashir to secure his worldwide exclusive interview with Diana, and “failed to meet high standards of integrity and transparency.”
The reporter was in “serious violation” of BBC producers’ guidelines when he faked bank statements and showed them to Earl Spencer for access to the princess in 1995, according to a report by Lord Dyson.
Prince William said his mother’s appearance on Panorama helped “worsen my parents’ relationship.”
The future king called for the documentary to never be shown again and said the BBC’s failures not only left his mother and family down, but the audience as well.
The BBC wrote to the Royal Family to apologize for the circumstances surrounding the interview – Personal expressions of regret were sent to the Queen, Prince of Wales, Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex and Diana’s brother Earl Spencer.

William said in his statement: “The interview was a major contribution to the worsening of my parents’ relationship and has since hurt countless other people.
“It brings an indescribable sadness to know that the failures of the BBC have contributed significantly to her fear, paranoia and isolation that I remember the last few years with her.
“But what saddens me most is that if the BBC had properly investigated the complaints and concerns first raised in 1995, my mother would have known she had been cheated.”
Williams’ brother Prince Harry said a “culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately cost him his life.”

He said, “Our mother was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to service. She was resilient, courageous and unquestionably honest.

“To those who have taken some form of responsibility, thank you for owning it. It is the first step towards justice and truth. Yet what deeply concerns me is that such practices – and even worse – are still prevalent today.
“In the past, and now, it’s bigger than a point of sale, a network or a publication.
“Our mother lost her life because of it, and nothing has changed. By protecting her heritage, we are protecting everyone and respecting the dignity with which she has lived her life. Let us remember who she was and what she stood for.
