Those who are older and wiser have often told me that the war years have been incredibly hard, but that at least they have a job. It’s something when you hear this generation say how happy they are that they’re not young these days.
There is no doubt that the leave program was a fantastic lifeline for thousands of Sheffielders. Without it, I hate to think how much more difficult things would be now.
But worker support programs, including holiday allowances and self-employed workers, expire in September. Well, they must have done it at some point, right?
Government borrowing fell in July as the economic rebound continued to boost tax revenues and the amount spent on the leave scheme declined, official figures show.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said borrowing stood at £ 10.4 billion in June, up from £ 20.5 billion a year earlier.
The ONS also said last month’s figure was the second-highest July borrowing since records began in 1993.
It comes as the holiday is set to end in September, although some have warned businesses may need additional help during the year.
Since the country was plunged into the first national lockdown in March 2020, the government has paid workers using the job retention program up to £ 2,500 per month.
The leave scheme began with an 80 percent government contribution to wages – and employers could choose whether or not to pay a 20 percent wage supplement, but they were not required to.
From July 2021, government contributions then fell to 70 percent and from August and September the government will pay 60 percent of wages.
So what happens when it all ends? Every restaurant or bar owner I’ve spoken to says business is far from normal and they are still keen to stay afloat. There is a long way to go.
