the app can be used to control the car even from afar – Corriere.it

ROME – The first petrol-powered CX-5s of the MY 2021 series will arrive in dealerships soon. For the Diesel version, however, it will be necessary to wait until early April. And there are not a few loyal Mazda customers who await the new SUV models that we have previewed on the streets of the capital, in the Viterbo area and on the Alban Hills. A test that can be summed up in three words: fun, performance, relaxation. Because this concentrate of technology – that Corriere Motori had tested the extreme conditions in 2018 on the icy waters of Lake Baikal, and a year later on the Alpine roads of Switzerland – it is confirmed as a very pleasant car to drive, more and more beautiful and always safer.

From home to the navigator with one click

The first novelty immediately perceptible when you get on board the proven Mazda CX-5 edition 2021, the completely renewed multimedia system, with a 10.25-inch display and smartphone connection, which the Hiroshima house has mounted on the 5 trim levels. A detail that does not only concern the infotainment on board: because on the mobile phone you can now receive – thanks to the dedicated My Mazda App – information on the position of the car (forgot where you parked?), On tire pressure, on the level of liquids . And remotely you can lock or unlock the doors, and send a route that you had studied at home or in the office, directly to the navigator. The second is increased driving comfort. And, at the first sudden braking, the impression that the 27-sensor system connected to the Adas equipment is now able to prevent any distraction by the driver.

Nine years after the debut, there is more determination

The new infotainment system is part of the HMI (Human Machine Interface) technologies designed by Mazda to guarantee the driver greater convenience, tranquility and safety. But in the ninth year of its debut (it was launched in 2012), this elegant car has a number of notable improvements also in terms of engines and design, with new body finishes. We tried one of the two special series: the Homura (the other the 100th Anniversary; while the Exceed leaves the range), which stands out for its glossy black 19 “wheels and exterior mirror shells in the same color; a gritty touch on the gray Polymetal Gray bodywork. Inside, the seats upholstered in black leather and suede are really beautiful, with evident red stitching. The 100th anniversary version – inspired by Mazda’s first car produced in 1920, the R360 Coup – is recognized by its pearl white bodywork, indeed: Snowflake White Pearl. And for the central hubcaps with logo. Inside, seats in Burgundy Red Nappa and logo evident on the headrests.

Emissions decreased by 7 percent

The engines, while the range remains unchanged (Skyactiv-G 2.0 with 165 bhp or 2.5 with 194 bhp; diesel 2.2 Skyactiv-D with 150 or 184 bhp), have been improved by working on reducing friction, so that now the emissions are still more contained (minus 7%): the values vary from 147 to 182 g of CO2 per km, depending on the equipment. Traction can be 2 or 4 wheel drive. The automatic transmission has also been updated (the CX-5 is offered with both 6-speed manual and automatic transmission) and the i-Active AWD all-wheel drive has been improved. Four engines are proposed, although at the moment in the dealership you will find only the first two petrol Skyactive-G 2 and 2.5 liters. In five weeks, the two Skyactive-D diesel units of 150 and 184 horsepower, with double variable geometry turbines, should also arrive.

Energy recovery in the supercapacitor

Worried about consumption? Don’t worry, these large naturally aspirated petrol engines – unlike the smallest turbos in circulation – both have a cylinder deactivation system: when the engine is running at low load or at constant speed, two of them shut down. And in addition to reducing consumption, C02 emissions collapse. On the 2500 version, then, there is also the i-Eloop (it was launched with the CX-5 in 2012), the system that recovers energy by storing it not in a battery but in a supercapacitor (a super capacitor), which does not transmit motion to the engine (for this reason the car is not classified as hybrid) but in reality it powers all the on-board systems by lifting the alternator from consumption. You can feel it both under your foot when you press the accelerator (also optimized, truly remarkable response) on the curves that descend from Nemi to Lanuvio, and when you stop to refuel. To understand how much energy you recover, try traveling with the energy flow screen on the new 8: 3 display.

Environmental policies

Not a hybrid, we said, but with the CX-%, Mazda’s commitment to reducing emissions and reducing CO2 throughout the entire production cycle is still maximum. We are not against the electric, but we have a multi-solution approach to issues concerning the good of the planet – underlines Roberto Pietrantoni, CEO of Mazda Italy -. An approach that combines different technologies, as the best way to reduce emissions. We have electrified cars, with MX-30 (ed. Read Corriere Motori road test here) and Mazda 3, and we are about to launch a platform that provides for the production of plug-in Hybrid. Electrification is therefore a decisive pillar of this strategy: by 2030, all Mazda vehicles will be electrified. However, many of the vehicles will continue to be equipped with an internal combustion engine.

Hybrids and biofuels with (almost) zero emissions

The plug-in hybrid project was born from the collaboration with Toyota which will soon bring interesting results, promised by the Hiroshima parent company: the first news could be announced in June; Mazda’s family of cars will expand with hybrid technology. Meanwhile, Mazda has burned its competitors by registering as the first car manufacturer to join the “eFuel Alliance”: a reality open to all companies and organizations that support the goal of establishing and promoting hydrogen and climate-neutral fuels (e-fuels) in terms of CO2 as credible and real actors for the reduction of emissions in the transport sector. And to move forward, in Japan it has started a study with the University of Hiroshima on a new generation of biofuels that in internal combustion engines would allow emissions close to zero.

The card, the prices, the guarantees

The Mazda CX-5 2021 has dimensions close to those of the previous models: length: 455 cm; width: 211; height: 168; wheelbase: 270. The engines – as already mentioned – are the two petrol engines, 2.0 and 2.5 Skyactiv-G, with 165 and 194 HP. And from April there will also be the Skyactive-D, diesel 2.2 with 150 or 184 hp. The six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Traction can be front or integral. Prices range from € 33,150 for the 2.0 petrol Business to € 49,550 for the 100th Anniversary edition, but until March 31, the pre-sale car with the Celebration pack: breakdown coverage for 5 years and the first 5 coupons included. Bonus of 4,250 euros on exchange or scrapping. For customers who choose the loan, there is a subsidized rate of 2.99 percent.
