The new identity card, with electronic chip and biometric elements, tested in the Oise, before generalization in August

Marlène Schiappa, the Deputy Minister in charge of Citizenship, officially launches Tuesday March 16 the new national electronic identity card from the site of the national printing office of Douai (North).

This new identity card will be tested from this Tuesday in the department of Oise before being gradually deployed throughout France, Franceinfo has learned.

It will be available on March 29 in Seine-Maritime and Reunion, from May 17 in all the departments of Hauts de France and Normandy, then on May 31 in Île-de-France then in the Grand Est and so on. following until a general delivery on August 2 indicates the calendar communicated by the Ministry of the Interior to the Association of Mayors of France.

At the beginning of August, it will no longer be possible to issue the old identity cards. The current valid national identity cards will be able to be used for about ten years, until 2031.

This new identity card, the size of a credit card, is smaller and more secure. It consists of an electronic chip which contains biometric elements. It contains all the usual information: surname, first name, date and place of birth, sex, nationality, address, date of validity. It also has a QR code with the same information, which will quickly detect possible fraud if the photo has been changed. There will be one scanned photo and two fingerprints, except for minors under the age of twelve.

These fingerprints will not be kept in the national file if the card holder requests them. More secure, this national identity card is valid for ten years instead of fifteen. The aim of this new generation card is to fight against fraud and identity theft. It also makes it easier to identify oneself to carry out online procedures.

France had until this summer to comply with the European regulation relating to the security of its identity documents.
