It is one of the most popular social networks with young people, but young people can meet bad people there. Also, Instagram has just announced a set of measures to better separate young users who are minors and adults.

For example, a new feature is going to be activated to prevent adults from sending direct personal messages to young people under the age of 18 who are not following them. When an adult tries to send a message to a teenager they are not already in contact with, the teenager will receive a notification that this is not possible and the message will be blocked. This is to prevent sexual predators from chasing victims on Instagram.

Recommendations will also be addressed to young people. For example, they will be asked to put their accounts in private, in order to restrict access to their images or their friends. And then, adult users who have had “suspicious behavior,” says Instagram, will have more difficulty seeing the profiles of young users.

In theory, you have to be at least 13 years old to register on Instagram, but it is well known that many young people give a false date of birth. Conversely, adults sometimes pose as minors. To combat this, the social network announces that it will use artificial intelligence algorithms to guess the real age of users. Does this mean that Instagram will access private conversations? In principle, no. It is the interactions between users that will be analyzed in order to guess the real age of the people.

Remember that Instagram belongs to the Facebook group – just like WhatsApp and Messenger – and that these platforms are often criticized because of the risks for young people. For them, it is about restoring trust with users, and also, by the way, with advertisers.
