Sian Berry pledges to ‘gold plate’ London’s green belt UK News

London mayoral candidate Sian Berry has pledged to ‘gold plate’ London’s green belt if elected on May 6.

The Green Party candidate has pledged to further protect the development zone and revealed plans to support small farmers while making green belt areas more accessible to Londoners through Transport for London.

Comprising parts of the outskirts of London, including the areas of Barnet and Enfield to the north and Bromley to the south, London’s green belt is a protected area with restrictions in place to prevent overdevelopment.

The London Green Belt Council said the area “currently faces an unprecedented development threat” and “urgent action is now needed” to preserve green spaces.

Sian Berry said today: “The green spaces that surround our city are precious but neglected, which puts them at risk. We must use it or lose it and no mayor has yet developed a coherent plan to enhance and support the green belt. Green will turn our city limits into a treasure that all Londoners can enjoy.

“My plan to plaster our green belt in gold means working with surrounding councils to improve and protect it. As Green Mayor, I will bring a fresh start, along with the real leadership and vision needed to get it right. ”

Much of the green belt falls outside of the GLA’s boundaries, but Sian Berry said she would work with surrounding councils across party lines to implement her ideas.

In addition to supporting farmers and increasing food production in the green belt, Ms Berry said she would seek to plant new woodlands and consult with experts to improve flood protection.
