Previously the absolute Nürburgring lap record holder, the Porsche 956, driven by the late Stefan Bellof during qualifying for the Nürburgring 1000 km in 1983, set a goal that would last for more than three decades. Due to the construction of the Formula 1 circuit at the Nürburgring, this race was the only time that top sports cars from Le Mans raced on the 12.9 mile Nordschleife track.

The 956 driven by Bellof, then 25, was powered by a 2.65-liter flat-six that produced over 620 horsepower and featured an underbody that produced downforce on the ground.

In qualifying, Bellof’s goal was to beat the fastest lap of his compatriot Porsche Jochen Mass (see below). Aided by new 13-inch front wheels, he flew, although he claimed to have made two mistakes and was pushed back at one point by a lower-class Porsche 911. Its average speed was over 125 mph.

Bellof continued to demonstrate his pace during the actual race, pulling a 36-second lead over Mass in the first six laps. This did not entirely please his team, who had urged him to save fuel. After his car’s lead was reduced during teammate Derek Bell’s stint, Bellof continued to tear up on his second stint – until he lost control and crashed into the Pfianzgarten at 160 mph. He escaped unharmed.

It remains the fastest car to go through the Nürburgring on combustion power alone.
