Skoda has confirmed that the new fourth-generation Fabia, which will be “significantly bigger” and “more expressive” than the outgoing car, will be unveiled on the evening of May 4.
The next-generation supermini will be the first Fabia based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 platform, also used for the current Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo.
New design sketches, along with recent spy photos, show that it will receive a major overhaul to align with Skoda’s latest design language, including a new, larger grille. Sharp LED lights will feature at both ends, while a larger rear spoiler, sleeker mirrors and active air intakes up front will optimize aerodynamic efficiency.
An interior design sketch gives a first glimpse of how “fresh colors” and “an increased sense of space” will mark the newcomer from its predecessor. The cabin will actually be a scaled-down version of that of the larger Octavia, with a self-contained infotainment central touchscreen and circular air vents prominent among the main visual differentiators of the current car.
Skoda has also confirmed that the Fabia will be equipped as an option with its latest ‘Virtual Cockpit’ offering, which allows drivers to configure the digital display to their own preferences on demand.
Skoda says the switch to the new platform means the Fabia will grow “in all dimensions”, pointing out that it is 111mm longer and 48mm wider than the current car, while the trunk will be 50 liters more larger than the 330 liters currently offered. It also promised more interior space for passengers.
The new Fabia will use the latest generation of gasoline engines from the Volkswagen Group, with most models using versions of the turbocharged three-cylinder TSI unit. In an effort to keep the Fabia affordable, Autocar understands that any of the initial engines are unlikely to be electrified.
Skoda has confirmed engines will be offered with either a manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
