Electric scooters: Sister of six-year-old boy with fractured skull by teenager calls for under-21 ban | UK News

The sister of a six-year-old boy who suffered a broken skull after being hit by an electric scooter driver has called for a ban on devices for those under 21.

It comes as the latest figures show more than 70 people have been injured during the government electric scooter trial – including 11 seriously injured people.

Brooklyn Smith said her little brother Jamie suffered from anxiety attacks at the sight of electric scooters after being knocked out by a teenage boy driving one of the vehicles in Leicester.

The 17-year-old boy, who failed to stop after the collision, pleaded guilty to several offenses during the incident, including serious injuries from reckless driving.

He was given a 12-month youth discharge order and was banned from the road for two years, Leicestershire police said.

Private electric scooters are prohibited from driving on public roads and sidewalks. Only rental electric scooters may be driven on roads in areas participating in official government testing.

Ms Smith, 21, told Sky News that when her family walk past an electric scooter driver, they now face Jamie in the opposite direction or change routes “because he’s having a total anxiety attack. “.

She said she continued to see e-scooter riders “fly over them like there’s no tomorrow” near the family home, despite testing the non-working devices in Leicester.

Ms Smith told Sky News: “I don’t think they should be able to hit the speeds that they are.

“It will be stupid for us to sit here and say, ‘We want them to be banned. We never want them to be redone. “It’s not realistic.

“They need to make sure that nothing like this happens again.”
