Are we learning who is “H”? Is Jo Davidson going to get away with it? These are the questions we have to answer in the Line of Duty finale …

The sixth season of Jed Mercurio’s crime thriller comes to what is sure to be an exciting finale tonight (May 2), with many unanswered questions.

Here are the burning questions on the minds of every Line of Duty fan …

Who is H?

Great. “Person H” is the mystery at the heart of the whole show. The dark “fourth man”. The corrupt cop who runs the criminal syndicate known as H. The one who can’t spell “definitely”.

Theories abound as to who this might be. Suspicion has already fallen on Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), but it seems too obvious for a playful writer like Mercurio.

This season, other candidates for ‘H’ include DS Joanne Davidson (Kelly Macdonald), Detective Superintendent Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) and the mysterious – and now presumed dead – former Detective Chief Inspector Marcus Thurwell (James Nesbitt ).

Will Steve’s drug test come back and bite him?

How many times now that Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) has rejected an email about his drug test? This has been a backstory this season, with poor Steve relying heavily on pain relievers for his back injury from the Fourth Series.

This will surely come back to haunt him in the finale, as the cracks begin to appear in AC-12. Will he be suspended at the crucial moment of the investigation?

Have we seen the last of Marcus Thurwell?

No UK cop show would be complete without an appearance by James Nesbitt, but is that really all we get from the North Irish actor? A snapshot, a grainy long-range photo and a badly burnt corpse?

Fans have speculated that Thurwell isn’t really dead and could still make an appearance in the finale. Did any of the Spanish cops really share Nesbitt’s distinctive eyebrows, or were our eyes fooling us?

Will Ted Hastings be forced to take early retirement?

DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin) has been stealing the show since returning to Line of Duty in season six – and she’s out to get the AC-12.

Last week she said she didn’t trust the AC-12 and their vehicles were being tracked. But with Hastings already tasked with taking early retirement after tackling too many “bent brasses,” is now the time Carmichael takes the reigns? “Mother of God”…

What will become of Jo Davidson?

It becomes likely that Jo Davidson is a relatively innocent bystander in the Central Police OCG (organized criminal gang) infiltration – and last week’s revelation of her dark family history was truly shocking.

While suspicion seems to fall elsewhere for the identity of “H”, will DS Davidson take the fall?

Who killed Gail Vella?

Let’s not forget the murder case at the heart of this series. Journalist Gail Vella (Andi Osho) was murdered after digging dirt on police ties to OCG.

Carl Banks was heard bragging in a commercial about the journalist’s murder before he was killed – but will we find out who really pulled the trigger?

Is this really the end of Line of Duty?

This has yet to be confirmed by the BBC, but there are worrying signs that Ted, Kate and Steve will be teaming up for the last time tonight.

“Every investigation has led to this,” as the trailer says, and if we have any conclusions on key questions like “who is H,” then that will look like an appropriate ending.

But with over 10 million tweaks every week, could the BBC find a way to expand it for a seventh round?

Line Of Duty ends at 9pm tonight on BBC1
