The polling stations are closed, the campaigns are over and all the candidates have to do is wait for the results.
The votes cast by millions of people across England, Scotland and Wales will now determine who controls the main levers of political power outside Westminster.

What did we vote on?
The results of the general elections in Scotland and Wales will decide the new composition of the Parliament of Holyrood and Senedd.
Each’s largest parties will then form the next Scottish and Welsh governments – either by absolute majorities or through coalitions with smaller parties.
In England there will be a series of outstanding results for the council elections, with 4,725 councilors selected from 143 councils. The result of the elections for the 25 members of the London Assembly will also be announced.
Competitions for 13 directly elected mayors were held in England, with expected results for eight regional mayors – including London, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and Tees Valley – and five city mayors in Bristol, Doncaster, Liverpool, North Tyneside and Salford.
In addition, 39 new police and crime commissioners will be declared across England and Wales.
All of these elections were scheduled, although some will take place a year later than expected due to the pandemic, but the only exception to this is the Hartlepool by-election.
The vote was called in March after Mike Hill resigned as Labor MP for the constituency with immediate effect before an employment tribunal on charges of sexual harassment.
