The Conservative Party to a seat behind Labor in Rotherham as the count continues UK News

For the first time in five years, all Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) seats are up for grabs in this local election.

Voters went to the polls on May 6 to elect borough councilors for the 59 wards, up from 63 wards following a boundary review in 2018.

The first Tory to be elected in six years paved the way for 15 other Tories to win board seats – from scratch.

The party is only one seat behind Labor, who currently have 16 seats, with the final result expected tomorrow.

Liberal Democrats have two seats and Rotherham’s Democratic Party has two.

Outgoing Labor advisers Denise Lelliott and David Roche take their seats, while the first Tory is elected to the council in six years. Emily Barley wins the Labor Party seat with 873 votes – just one vote pushed her to cross the finish line, after two recounts.

Emily says both recounts were “brutal”, but she is “very happy” to have been elected.

“We’ve knocked on thousands of doors in this campaign, and people have brought up ordinary bread and butter issues at the door – it’s the potholes and the crumbling environment they have around. ‘them.

“They are not very satisfied with the service they receive from the advice – you often hear that the advice is very focused on the city center, to the detriment of more remote places.

“We’re going to focus on getting Hoober’s fair share of funding.”
