Cupra previewed its first electric car, the Born, ahead of its production-ready unveiling next Tuesday (May 25).
First introduced as El-Born in 2020, the hot sedan shares its MEB underpinnings and overall silhouette with the Volkswagen ID 3, but adopts a series of bespoke design features to set it apart.
The Born production seeks to stay true to the concept, in addition to losing the “ El ” part of its model name. Shown in a matte blue finish with Cupra-branded copper trim accents, it has a different front end than its Volkswagen sibling, incorporating angled LED headlights, a wider lower grille, and a pointed hood that hints at its performance aspirations.
Elsewhere, we can see that the Born will feature bespoke wheel designs, a wrap-around Formentor-style taillight bar, and a contrasting black C-pillar.
Inside, preview images suggest copper detailing will be used on the center console and door panels, with a unique diamond pattern applied to various surfaces.
Speaking ahead of the production car’s reveal, Cupra’s design director Jorge Díez said the wheels pushed into the corners allowed the company to “create a totally occupant-centric design with an interior very spacious “.
He also explained the steps Cupra has taken to differentiate the Born from the ID 3: “The headlights identify with a person’s face, so we tilted them a bit more than usual to express character and determination to know what you want and what you want. he. The character is further accentuated by the prominent air intake at the bottom of the car to keep the car close to the road.
“We emphasized the width of the car with a horizontal light signature and combined it with a very pronounced diffuser, which increases the efficiency and aerodynamics of the car. We know that electrification has to go hand in hand with efficiency, and in this regard, the team has combined the two in perfect harmony.
“On the side, we created angular shapes on the shoulder line and stretched the window graphics for a greater sense of tension and speed.”
It is not yet confirmed whether the Born will be available with the full range of transmissions offered on the ID 3, but a top-of-the-line 302bhp – as offered on the larger ID 4 – is considered out of the question, because the tailgate is shorter. the wheelbase cannot accommodate the four-wheel drive system of this SUV.
