Coronavirus case revisions have led to a drop of 67 cases in Somerset, according to the latest figures reported on Tuesday (May 18).

In today’s announcement, Public Health England revealed a change to the way cases are being counted.

They say the introduction of a new system disrupted the figures, as it required a removal of cases where a positive rapid lateral flow test was followed by all negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests taken within three days.

As a result, across the UK, 4,776 cases have now been removed.

They add: “Newly-reported cases for the UK and England were unaffected. Historical published date totals have not been changed.

“Newly-reported cases at regional and local authority level within England are calculated as the daily change in the total number of cases.

“This means that for 18 May 2021, these show significantly lower numbers or zero, and do not reflect the actual number of new cases reported on that date.”

The Government said a further seven people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, bringing the UK total to 127,691.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have been 152,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 2,412 lab-confirmed cases in the UK.

It brings the total to 4,450,392 after an adjustment in the way case numbers are calculated.
