Millions of people risk long-term hair damage by making 11 simple mistakes UK News

According to experts, millions of Britons make simple mistakes in everyday activities that damage their hair.

Poor nutrition, wearing a hat, and even spending too much time in the sun can damage your locks.

People are warned that even touching your hair too much can cause damage as it creates grease which can impact your strands.

This follows a study commissioned by the hair supplement Vitabiotics Perfectil, which found that only 14% of women are confident that they know what is good and bad for their hair.

The study of 2,000 women found that 46% felt their hair was very important to their appearance, and 84% were more confident when their locks were beautiful.

Celebrity hairstylist Sarrah Hamid, who works with Vitabiotics Perfectil, appears in a video educating women about the damage they could cause to their hair.

She said: “For many of us, our hair plays an important role in our appearance and in our self-confidence.

“We often feel good when we know our hair is beautiful – think about when you step out of the salon with a freshly colored or cut style.

“But while we may think that we are doing all we can to keep our hair in good condition, there is so much that we all do every day without even realizing what could be having an impact.

A spokesperson for Vitabiotics Perfectil said: “A bad hair day can have a real impact on your mood and how you feel.

“We all want our hair to look and feel better, especially now that we’re more likely to go out and socialize.

“Taking good care of our hair has never been more important for our inner and outer confidence”

Vitabiotics Perfectil has created a quiz to let you know if your lifestyle is affecting your hair.

Here is a list of the most common mistakes you make when it comes to your hair according to Sarrah Hamid:

Towel drying coarsely or excessively

Towel drying can make your ends feel rough and cause even more split ends breakage

Touching / playing too much with your hair

So many of my friends do this and I always tell them. It creates grease, it is a transfer of dirt, it causes frizz and can cause thinning of the hair

Wearing hats

Excessive wear of hats is bad. Hats can be good for your hair, especially in the sun, as they protect it from direct sunlight, but constant use of hats can stop oils in your hair, leaving your ends dry and damaged. They can also rub and the sweat absorbed under the hair is not good, especially if you have extensions.

Tight ponytails or buns

Ponytails or buns can be easy, but when you have one, you’re pulling on your hair, causing stress in some spots – especially with constant wear and tear – which can cause baldness. If you like your hair tied back, try swapping elastic bands with a silk scrunchie as a nicer alternative.

Do not wash hairbrushes

Cleaning your hairbrush is so important and just hygienic. Any brittle hair caught in your brushes can cause more damage to your split ends before you even use the brush.

Sunbathe / sit in the sun

The sun isn’t bad for your hair at all, but it can dry out your hair. UV light also destroys the bonds in your hair, creating dull or dry hair. I always recommend my clients to use oils or masks in their hair when sunbathing, but the sun also has a lot of benefits, it can naturally lighten your hair, it helps with hair loss

Haircuts and colors at home

Proceed with caution! Home hair dye kits are not made specifically for your hair, so they are unlikely to look like the color on the box. Always be sure to do a skin test before using a household color. And it is better to avoid haircuts at home. Let your hair grow, you will appreciate the professional cut much more. And don’t touch your bangs!

Having a bad diet, like drinking more alcohol, having more junk food

Our hair is the first to suffer along with our skin. Poor nutrition can weaken your hair. If you’re worried about missing certain nutrients from your diet, consider a daily supplement to support your nutritional intake. Look for products that contain biotin and zinc that help maintain normal hair.

Styling with straighteners / curling tongs

As little heat as possible is always good for the hair, allowing it to grow. Constant heat on your hair causes breakage. If you cannot stay away from heaters, protect your hair with heat spray before using it.

Washing your hair too often

It is never good to wash your hair too much, twice a week is the best for me. Your hair will eventually get clean and you can train it to hold.

Skip the toppings

A regular cut every 6 to 8 weeks is always good to avoid bad breakage. A regular cut is actually good for growth.
