Mayor of London Sadiq Khan today announced his intention to tackle fuel poverty and the climate emergency by modernizing social housing in London.
In what he called a ‘renovation revolution’, Mr Khan revealed a new partnership program between social landlords and construction companies that could see up to £ 10bn of renovations carried out in the capital.
The work will include the low-carbon upgrade of social housing in London, including better insulation and clean energy sources such as solar panels, creating up to 150,000 jobs over the next 10 years.
Announcing the plans earlier today (June 2), Sadiq Khan said he was “delighted” that London is leading the way for a “modernization revolution”.
He said: “A strong economic recovery from Covid-19 and a green recovery are not mutually exclusive. This transformative approach to home improvement will directly help people living in aging and energy inefficient homes, and could play a critical role in lowering energy bills and tackling fuel poverty. It will also help Londoners gain the skills they need for jobs in the green economy, rebuilding our city after Covid to be cleaner, greener and fairer. ”
Around 15 percent of London households are believed to be in fuel poverty, where the cost of heating a home is so high that residents fall below the official poverty line.
In addition to the partnership program, the Mayor of London will also benefit from a £ 3.45million investment from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) which will see the creation of a ‘ National Renovation Center of Excellence in London.
The center will offer support and assistance to social housing providers who wish to undertake major renovation projects from “summer 2021”.
London Assembly Housing Committee Chair Sian Berry said today via social media that she welcomed the new modernization plans, but stressed that “details are important for quality and security”.
Ms Berry said on Twitter: “Mega partnerships with big companies could exclude newer and better companies.”
