BMW i4 challenges Tesla Model 3 with 367 mile range Car News

BMW has detailed the production version of its new i4 electric sedan in detail, promising up to 536bhp from a variant bearing the M badge and a maximum range of 367 miles.

Based on a specially adapted version of the 3 Series CLAR architecture, the i4 is intended for the Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3, but in the top-of-the-line M50 form, it will deliver performance rivaling the Porsche Taycan and Audi E- tron GT. It will launch in the UK in November, priced at £ 51,905.

It will initially be available in rear-wheel drive eDrive40 versions with 335 hp, in Sport and M Sport versions, and in M50 xDrive forms with 536 hp.

In the UK, 18-inch wheels will be standard on all models, and entry-level eDrive 40 Sport cars will feature gloss black aluminum interior trim and gloss exterior trim elements. The M Sport trim, which starts at £ 53,405, adds bespoke exterior styling cues and alloy wheels, along with a leather steering wheel.

Priced at £ 63,905, the M50 uses a 255 hp motor on the front axle and a 308 hp motor on the rear axle. Combined torque is rated at 586 lb-ft, compared to 317 lb-ft for the eDrive40.

The M50 also has a unique Sport Boost feature that can be used to unleash full power for around 10 seconds when driven in Sport mode. With this enabled, the M50 can do 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds. The eDrive40 can complete the same sprint in 5.7 seconds.

The i4 stores its reserves in a ground-mounted 80.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, which is said to be 30% more energy dense than that used by today’s i3 supermini.

It can charge up to 210 kW to gain up to 102 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Additionally, adjustable regenerative braking can recharge the battery at rates of up to 195 kW in the M50 and 116 kW in the eDrive40.

Depending on tire size and other options specified, the official WLTP range is between 255 and 367 miles.

At 4785mm long, 1852mm wide and 1448mm high, the i4 has dimensions similar to those of the 3 Series, which Development Director Frank Weber points out as crucial for its appeal.

He explained: “There will be 3 Series customers, but the i4 is also attractive because of its cargo capacities and space inside, which will also attract potential 5 Series customers – people looking for a sporty sedan. We chose the exact space of the i4 for good reason.
