Sheffield date of assault trial against football club manager Joey Barton UK News

The Bristol Rovers manager and former Manchester City, Newcastle and Burnley midfielder is accused of assaulting a rival manager.

Barton, 37, of Fox Bank Close in Widnes, Cheshire, is accused of causing bodily harm to Daniel Stendel, then manager of Barnsley FC, in April 2019.

Barton was in charge at Fleetwood Town when they faced Barnsley at Oakwell in a Ligue 1 game on that date and Barnsley won 4-2. Barton has been charged following an incident in the tunnel.

He took over from the Bristol Rovers in February, who have just been relegated to League Two. Stendel should take over from French club Nancy.

Barton had previously been released on unconditional bail before his trial at a previous hearing.

The Press Association press service says the trial will take place on Monday 7 June at Sheffield Crown Court.
