A London-based start-up has revealed an innovative electric car design solution that it says could provide 30% more range per charge.

Page-Roberts, founded in 2019, aims to “dramatically increase the efficiency of electric vehicles with advanced engineering solutions that deliver design elegance.”

The company’s patented design concept rethinks the position of the battery in a conventional electric passenger car. Rather than placing it under the floor, as is the case on most production cars, Page-Roberts requests that the battery be mounted vertically in the cabin itself.

Highlighting the extra height, extended wheelbase, and “structural complexities” of a conventional “skateboard” arrangement, Page-Roberts postulates that a vertically oriented power supply could improve the design, user experience and the cost of manufacturing electric cars.

The battery would be positioned between two rows of opposing seats, in an arrangement that Page-Roberts says is “much more compact” than existing models. It would also allow the car to sit lower, be more aerodynamically efficient and weigh less.

As a result, the company claims, the car has the potential to travel 30% further on one charge, or use a smaller battery to maintain range similar to existing levels.

He also estimates that manufacturing costs could be reduced by up to 36%.

The design is envisioned as a solution for small electric cars, especially “sleek and sporty four-seater”, which would benefit from the lower silhouette and shorter wheelbase.

Mark Simon, CTO of Page-Roberts, formerly of engineering firm Ricardo, explained the motivation for the design: “The challenges regarding battery cost and energy density as well as range and infrastructure charging continue to slow the progress of electric vehicles, despite car brands and technology leaders. race to put their footprint on the market.
