Brexit: EU’s patience with UK “wears out very, very thin” as no deal reached on sausage trade war | UK News

Discussions between the UK and the EU on post-Brexit rules in Northern Ireland have ended without an agreement being reached.

Brexit Minister Lord Frost said he and European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic had broken off their talks without “breakthroughs or breaks” with the EU on the implementation of Ireland’s protocol. North.

In a statement following the meeting between the two men, the government recognized the “urgent need to continue discussions in order to make real progress”.

“The UK will continue to come up with detailed proposals, as we have done throughout this year, and looks forward to discussing any proposal the EU may come up with,” he said.

The showdown comes as Boris Johnson fights to avoid a sausage trade war with Brussels which could see chilled meats banned from stores in Northern Ireland from the end of this month.

Before the talks, which took place in London, Lord Frost warned that time was running out to reach an agreement and called for “common sense” to prevail.

Mr Sefcovic said there were “many fundamental shortcomings in the UK’s implementation” of the two sides’ trade deal and the EU would act “firmly” if the UK did not ‘did not agree on the deadlines to comply with its obligations.

Speaking after the three-and-a-half-hour talks on Wednesday, Lord Frost said the “frank and honest discussions” had not resulted in a resolution, but both sides agreed to continue communicating.
