COVID-19: Couples will know on Monday if wedding restrictions will be lifted, Minister says | UK News

A government minister has said he would like more people to be allowed to attend weddings in England and has hinted Boris Johnson may say something specific about it next week.

Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick told Sky News he “would like to see the number of people attending weddings increase” and said the government was considering “carefully” whether to increase the current limit of 30 guests.

Mr Jenrick said weddings will be one of the topics the Prime Minister will address on June 14, when a decision must be made on whether the government’s target date of June 21, for the next easing of restrictions in England, can go ahead.

Planning a wedding has been a difficult process for many since the first COVID confinement in March 2020.

Since the third stage of the government’s roadmap on May 17, marriages and civil partnership ceremonies are allowed for up to 30 people in COVID secure locations that are allowed to open.

Prior to the third milestone of the government’s roadmap last month, receptions could only take place with a maximum of 15 people in the form of a sit-down meal at outdoor locations with COVID precautions in place.

Under plans for June 21, people could invite as many guests as they wanted to their wedding – which could take place indoors or outdoors.

Welsh Prime Minister Mark Drakeford issued new guidelines on Friday, which put outdoor wedding receptions in the same category as sporting events, concerts and festivals.
