After the college refused to remove the statue, academics at Oriel College claimed they would not teach or participate in any outreach programs. Another said: “If they do this, I hope the Rhodes scholarships will be canceled as well, you cannot have one without the other.
“Talk about the tail wagging the dog.
“If you don’t like the heat, get out of the kitchen.”
The row erupted after the college revealed it would not be removing the statue despite ties to the UK’s colonial past.
The statute sparked protests last year after the death of George Floyd and was led by the “Rhodes Must Fall” movement.
Some donors have claimed that the statue is a source of shame for academics at the college.

“In the face of Oriel’s stubborn attachment to a statue that glorifies colonialism and the wealth it has produced for the college, we believe we have no choice but to withdraw all discretionary work and good collaboration. will.”
As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Danny Dorling, Halford Mackinder professor of geography at St Peter’s College, claimed the move was intended to show discontent over the decision to keep the statue.
He said: “The extent of the upheaval is probably greater than what they predicted and it is possible that they do not realize the strength to feel this.
“It’s one way to make it obvious in case it isn’t clear.
“To have your university associated with the statue of a racist is deeply upsetting and dirties the whole university.”
Other academics, however, claimed the move was “pathetic”.
One said: “The petition is clearly bonkers and the adults around Oxford should know better.
“It’s crazy to take their virtue signals away from Oriel’s undergraduates.”
Last year, Oriel’s governing body claimed it wanted to remove the Rhodes statue.
An independent commission has been set up to look at the main issues surrounding it, but last month the governing body said the monument’s removal should be delayed due to the cost.
