Some of the world’s largest carmakers and tech companies are planning to build UK battery “giga-factories” amid government openings in the sector.
Six companies, including automakers Ford and Nissan and South Korean electronics giants LG and Samsung, are in talks with the government over the location of battery factories in Britain, the Financial Time reported.
Interested companies also include start-ups BritishVolt, which publicly expressed interest last year, and Slovakian InoBat.
Ford is currently considering potential locations for a battery supplier for its Transit Custom, an all-electric van slated to go into production in Turkey in 2023.
A Ford spokesperson said: “As we have said before, we will confirm the battery supplier for the Transit Custom as the launch approaches.” InaBat, LG and Samsung did not respond to requests for comment. In May, it was announced that Nissan could build a battery plant to support its Sunderland plant.
A government spokesperson said it was “dedicated to securing giga-factories, and continues[s] to work closely with investors and automakers to advance plans for mass production of batteries in the UK ”.
Britain has only one company so far with plans for a UK gigafactory. BritishVolt, a £ 2.6 billion start-up founded in 2019, wants to build a manufacturing site near Blyth for its electric batteries.
