A live stream of the summer solstice sunrise at Stonehenge has been removed after people ignored coronavirus guidelines not to visit the site.

Hundreds of people had gathered inside the stone circle in video footage captured from the scene, along with a banner reading “Stand up for Stonehenge“.

Thousands of people received pre-recorded images of the stones when they logged into English Heritage’s Facebook and YouTube pages for the solstice.

The flow resumed around 5 a.m., showing largely cloudy skies.

Host Ed Shires apologized for the outage, saying: “I have to say that we were disappointed that a number of people chose to ignore our request not to travel to the stones this morning and this is the reason why we could not bring you the photos that we would have liked to have taken.

“It’s disappointing to see this happening, but unfortunately in these kinds of situations we have to put the safety of our staff first and that’s why we had an interruption this morning.”

“The police told us that the people have now been dispersed and the situation is under control,” he said.

English Heritage did not explain how the crowds that flocked to the site prevented them from broadcasting the sunrise live.

Stonehenge was expected to welcome visitors in person until the government postpones the easing of the lockdown until mid-July, with English Heritage calling on people to watch their feeds instead.
