The TV presenter, who became known for her tense confrontations with the contestants when she presented the BBC’s hit quiz The Weakest Link, becomes the new host of the Channel 4 quiz show Countdown next week. The 76-year-old explained a particular interaction she had with a Countdown competitor, who “taught English to non-English speaking people.” But she was stunned by his answer to one of his questions about his profession.

The countdown host also insisted that she didn’t want her “language to be mutilated”, adding: “We don’t know if we offend people.”

She said: “I have a podiatrist, a gay podiatrist – it’s not funny, I’m just telling you – lives with a gay partner, and they adopted twins, and they have in the process, they have learned what I would call a lot of ‘wake up’ language.

She added: “Actually, a competitor this week on Countdown said he was teaching English to non-English speaking people, and I said, ‘You mean you are teaching English to foreigners?

“And he said,” We never say that. “Is that awake? Does anybody know that?

“So I’m sick of it, I’m sick of people telling me I have to say ‘mixed heritage’ and not ‘mixed race’.

“I just think people who can’t tell us what to do are telling us what to do.

“I don’t want my tongue to be mutilated – I don’t want to lose the English language.

The outspoken host said she wouldn’t be able to say many things today that she had said before when hosting the Weakest Link for eleven and a half years.

When asked who would be a good host for today’s interrupted program, Ms Robinson replied: ‘Well I’m not in charge of light entertainment at the BBC, but I would probably suggest someone completely. different, with a different approach.
