Road work to widen Clapham Road in Bedford begins next week – and will be completed in spring 2022 Bedford News

Road works begin from Monday June 28 to help alleviate congestion on the Clapham Road roundabout.

Clapham Road between Paula Radcliffe Way and Manton Lane will be widened to create an additional lane for traffic and a specific left turn filter lane to allow traffic up Manton Lane to bypass the roundabout.

Improvements will also be made to allow people coming from the south on Clapham Road to turn right into Sainsbury’s, which will also help ease traffic on the roundabout.

The Clapham Road roundabout itself will be widened to create more space for traffic, and traffic lights will be installed to help reduce congestion during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

Improved pedestrian and cycle crossings will also be installed.

The work should be completed in the spring of 2022. In order to minimize disruption, the majority of this work will be carried out using temporary lane closures.

Resurfacing will also be carried out as part of this project, early next year, which will require gradual overnight closures of the road.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday June 28 at Bedford’s Northern Gateway to relieve congestion in this busy area and make roads safer for all road users as part of the Transporting Bedford project.

This work all follows other improvements to Transporting Bedford in the area, including the widening of Manton Lane.
