A minister has defended allowing UEFA officials and VIP fans to attend matches in the final stages of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium.
John Whittingdale told Sky News that there will be “people coming” for the semi-finals and the final of the tournament, but that they will be subject to “strict restrictions on what they can do with other and we measured these things very carefully. “
It comes after it was reported that visiting football VIPs could be exempted from the self-isolation rules to allow them to attend games.
According to the Times, the government is close to a compromise deal that will force UEFA and FIFA officials, politicians, sponsors and broadcasters to agree to only attend matches, which would place them indeed in “bubbles”.
John Healey of Labor told Sky News the development was an example of “a rule for them and a rule for others.”
“We have seen this time and time again from ministers,” the shadow secretary of defense said.
Whittingdale said the decision to increase capacity at Wembley for the semi-finals and the final to over 60,000 was based on scientific advice and that the government “will do nothing” to jeopardize the gains made in the fight against the coronavirus.
He said ministers were moving to the next stage of his trial of mass events “where for a number of events we will increase capacity”.
Mr Whittingdale added: “But at every step of the way we obviously listen to scientific advice.
“We will not do anything that would endanger public health.”
