Delta variant results in ‘tough decision’ to postpone Shuttleworth’s Great Balloon Race Extravaganza Bedford News

The organizers of this weekend’s Great Balloon Race Extravaganza at the Shuttleworth Estate have postponed the event to September in the wake of the delta variant of Covid-19.

Originally scheduled for June 25-27, the event will now be held September 10-12 at the Bedfordshire site with exactly the same lineup of acts, balloons and exhibits.

Ticket holders have been contacted and will receive new tickets for September dates. The organizers will reimburse ticket holders who cannot make it to the new dates.

Bedford has received a Covid warning from the government and is one of the areas where the Delta variant is spreading rapidly and residents are advised not to travel.

Great Balloon Race Extravaganza Event Director Adam Faulkner said: “It was a very difficult decision but the right one. Although our event has socially distant metrics, we don’t want to increase the risk of the variant spreading given that there are over 2,000 people in attendance.

“We have contacted all ticket holders to inform them of the change and look forward to seeing them in September. If they can’t attend, contact us to arrange a refund.

When that takes place, attendees will have the chance to see the UK’s biggest hot air balloons. Up to 50 balloons of all shapes and sizes will fill the skies of Bedfordshire and beyond before returning for a dazzling nighttime glow show at dusk accompanied by the Ibiza Classics Orchestra.

The extravagance will also include a sky dance from a 100-foot crane by Incandescence, as well as fireworks. Social distancing measures include allocated plots, hand sanitizing stations, catering and food and drink collection service – via an event app – and additional toilets.
