Some 58 cases have been recorded in Sherburn and its neighboring village South Milford in the past seven days, more than double the next highest place for cases in North Yorkshire, which is Catterick Garrison with 24 cases.

Other neighboring towns of Monk Fryston, Hambleton and Byram have recorded 20 cases according to data from the North Yorkshire County Council.

A statement from Sherburn High School and the North Yorkshire County Council read: “Due to an increase in positive cases of coronavirus in both students and staff, and in order to prioritize both the quality of education and health and the well-being of staff and students, STAR Multi Academy Trust has made the difficult decision to temporarily close the school.

“This decision is supported by the North Yorkshire County Council and Public Health England. The school will be closed from Thursday June 17 to Monday June 28 and remote learning will be available to all students.

“Several positive cases of coronavirus were reported to the school last week and over the weekend as a result of routine lateral flow tests at home. Since then, more cases have been reported by PCR testing.

“The health and well-being of all students, staff, and members of the community at large, as well as the continuity of education and the care of students currently not in school, remain the priorities of the school. “.
