Rapist Sam Kesete jailed for the Brighton bombings Brighton News

A rapist who forced a woman into her apartment before attacking her has been jailed for 15 years.

He attacked a 21-year-old on his way home along Oxford Street near London Road in the early hours of November 28 last year.

She met Sam Kesete, 21, a student and part-time store worker, of Canterbury Drive, Brighton, who forced her into her apartment next door.

He raped her before finally allowing her to leave, walking with her to his own home.

At the time, officers were looking for Kesete for the sexual assault of another woman outside a nightclub in Kings Road Arches, Brighton on September 18.

Detective Constable Elaine Welsh of the Brighton Safeguard Investigation Unit said: “Kesete was with friends and a group of other people outside a nightclub on the seafront from Brighton when he sexually assaulted an 18-year-old girl who was a member of that group.

“She and others immediately challenged him and he was kicked from the club.

“Agents had been looking for him ever since and the correct description of the assailant in November was clearly a potential link to the first assault.

“The second victim was also able to identify the apartment as being in the same area that we already thought Kesete was living in, and this, coupled with swift police work including door-to-door investigations allowed for a speedy arrest and taken Kesete off the streets.

“Investigating such crimes is a top priority for us, as well as ensuring that victims receive expert support.

“The victim of the Kesete attack in November was very courageous and supported our investigation throughout, but it had a major impact on her which will clearly be long lasting.”

Kesete was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison when he appeared in Hove Crown Court on Thursday, June 24.

He had admitted in an earlier hearing two counts of rape against a 21-year-old woman in her apartment on November 28 and sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman by touching in Kings Road Arches on September 18.

He will have to serve at least ten years before being considered for supervised release, and even if he is released before serving 15 years, he will have to serve an additional six years under license.

Kesete will also be a registered sex offender for life.
