Euro 2020: Wales eliminated after 4-0 defeat to Denmark | UK News

Wales missed out on a place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals after a 4-0 loss to Denmark.

After finishing second to Italy in the group stage, fans were hopeful that a team led by talisman Gareth Bale could triumph in the round of 16.

But that was not the case, thanks to two goals from Kasper Dolberg, one from Joakim Maehl and another in added time from Martin Braithwaite.

A bad day for Wales was made worse by a late red card for Harry Wilson.

Wales captain Bale said Denmark’s second goal should have been ruled out for an apparent foul, but added: “I had a feeling the referee may have been influenced by a lot of [Danish] supporters here, but that’s how it is. There’s no point in looking for excuses now.

“We missed an opportunity but what we can’t fault is the effort the boys showed and that’s the minimum required for this group and I’m still proud of them.”

Denmark will now face the Netherlands or the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals on July 3.

The round of 16 match took place in Amsterdam, meaning many Welsh fans were unable to be there in person to watch the game, due to Dutch coronavirus rules banning non-essential travel from the Kingdom -United.

Only supporters who had followed the team during their previous match in Italy, or those living in the EU and Schengen areas, could freely travel to the country for the match.

In the 2016 European tournament, Wales reached the semi-finals, crashing after a 2-0 loss to future winners Portugal.

In Saturday’s other game, Italy beat Austria 2-1 after extra time, preparing for a quarter-final against either Belgium or Portugal.

The Italians are now unbeaten in 31 consecutive games – a new national record.

COVID restrictions have left Wales fans outnumbered – and they’ll wonder if that made a difference
