Matt Hancock has resigned as Secretary of Health Brighton News

Matt Hancock resigned as Secretary of Health the day after video footage of him kissing an assistant in his ministerial office was released in violation of coronavirus restrictions.

Pictures and videos showed Mr Hancock in an embrace with his assistant Gina Coladangelo last month, and the health secretary was facing increasing pressure to step down due to the violation of social distancing rules.

Mr Hancock wrote to Boris Johnson on Saturday and said: ‘The last thing I want is my private life to distract from the stated purpose that leads out of this crisis.’

He said: “We owe it to the people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we let them down like I did by breaking the guidelines.”

In response, the Prime Minister wrote: ‘You should step down from office very proud of what you have accomplished – not just to fight the pandemic, but even before Covid-19 hits us. ”

Mr Johnson had refused to sack Mr Hancock, his spokesman saying the PM considered the case closed after receiving an apology from the MP for West Suffolk on Friday.
