Honda has unveiled the first official images of its new Civic hatchback, which will go on sale in Europe in fall 2022.
Like the new HR-V and Jazz, the Civic will be a hybrid-only proposition for its next generation, using the same gasoline-electric e: HEV setup as its supermini and SUV siblings.
The e: HEV system combines a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with a pair of electric motors, producing 108 hp in the Jazz and 129 hp in the HR-V. In hybrid mode, the gasoline engine is used to generate power for the electric motor, reconnecting to the drive wheels via a one-ratio gearbox under higher loads.
The larger CR-V SUV comes with a larger 143bhp 2.0-liter petrol engine as part of its e: HEV system, but it is not yet confirmed which variants of the powertrain will be deployed on Honda’s rival Ford Focus.
The Civic is the latest model in Honda’s European portfolio to switch to hybrid only, in line with its goal of electrifying all mainstream passenger cars by the end of next year.
The hot Civic Type R, however, will retain a pure combustion setup, likely based on an evolved version of the current car’s 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder “K20C1”, which produces 316bhp – making it one. of the most powerful front-wheel drive cars on sale today.
The Japanese firm has taken an evolutionary approach to styling the 11th-generation Civic, though the new car notably adopts a fastback-style sloping roofline, abandoning the prominent rear wing of the current model. The tailgate itself is said to be lighter and has smaller hinges for a sharper roofline, while the A-pillars are two inches further back than on the current car and the wheelbase is 1, longer. 4 inches.
The Civic was revealed in North American specs, but is broadly representative of what we’ll have in Europe next year; the most obvious change in style will be the removal of the amber indicator lenses. The interior will also be widely reproduced, with the Mk11 Civic adopting a minimalist, “human-centered” cabin design similar to that of the new HR-V and Jazz.
A honeycomb trim panel with integrated air vents spans the full width of the dashboard, while a standalone 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen offers Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity Auto. In the United States, premium cars have a 10.2-inch digital display, Bose sound system, wireless charging, and a larger 9.0-inch touchscreen, but details of the European finish have not yet been confirmed.
