Sajid Javid “Honored” To Take Up As Health Secretary After Matt Hancock Leaves For COVID Rules Violation | Politics News

Sajid Javid starts working today as the new Health Secretary, replacing Matt Hancock who resigned after being caught kissing a close associate.

Former Chancellor and Minister of the Interior Mr. Javid said he was “honored” to be appointed to the post – barely 90 minutes after Downing Street announced Mr Hancock had resigned on Saturday night.

The 51-year-old returns to work not only with the coronavirus to contend with, but NHS reform, wage battles, the lack of a welfare plan, the appointment of a new NHS chief executive and a huge backlog of treatments.

NHS in limbo after Hancock resigns

Mr. Hancock resigned yesterday after a CCTV leak showed him kissing his assistant and former lobbyist Gina Coladangelo in his departmental office.

Ms Coladangelo will also be leaving her post at the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (DHSC), it has been confirmed.

The images, published by The Sun, are from May 6 – more than a week before social distancing rules were relaxed around close indoor contact for people from separated households.

In his resignation letter, Mr Hancock said: “We owe it to the people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we let them down like I did by breaking guidelines.
