The deadline for applying for EU Settlement Status (EUSS) is fast approaching and a delay in processing applications worries thousands of EU nationals living in the UK. About five million requests have already been accepted in one form or another, however, there is a blockage of up to 400,000 forms last week – and 10,000 to 12,000 requests made daily.
The Home Office has now admitted that processing EUSS forms could take months, and EU nationals are urged to submit their applications as soon as possible.
The application deadline is fast approaching, with Wednesday, June 30, 2021, the last day on which applications are accepted.
Immigration Minister Kevin Foster said anyone who applied before the deadline but has not yet received a decision will be protected.
He said the plaintiff’s rights would be protected by law, but warned the deadline would not be extended.

Mr Foster said: “The EU’s settlement system has been open to the public since March 2019. We believe this has given people plenty of time to apply.
“The simple fact that there were over 5.6 million requests at the end of last month is testament to this.
“I want to be clear – we will not extend the deadline.
“Put simply, extending the deadline is not in itself a solution to reaching people who have not yet applied and we would simply be in a position later where we would be asked to extend again, creating even more of uncertainty. “
If you successfully apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, you will be able to continue living and working in the UK after June 30, 2021.
You will receive either:
- established status
- preset status
The government website says: “You will not be asked to choose which one you are applying for.
“The status you get depends on how long you live in the UK when you apply.
“Your rights will be different depending on what status you get and when you started living in the UK.”
If you are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen and started living in the UK before December 31, 2020, you will need proof of:
- your identity
- your residence in the UK, unless you have a valid permanent residence permit or valid indefinite leave to stay or enter the UK
You can apply by visiting the government website here and clicking “Start Now”.
There may be a queue for those entering the site, with the current wait time of up to 13 minutes at the time of writing.
Once you reach the end of the queue, you will have 25 minutes to begin your request.
