Sheffield Wednesday defender set to be shocked by ambitious League One rival Ipswich Town UK News

EADT reports that 23-year-old winger Matt Penney, who was one of 10 senior players confirmed to leave with free transfer terms at the end of their contracts, will join Ipswich Town.

Penney, a longtime Wednesday who made his 2018 debut and made 32 appearances for the club, spent a season on loan at German second division team St Pauli during the 2019/20 season and was hoping for a decisive year at Hillsborough, but spent much of the season on the sidelines despite being the only recognized defender on the left.

A confirmed change for Penney would see him follow Joost van Aken (Zulte Waregem) and Jordan Rhodes (Huddersfield) as those who secured a new club.

Sheffield Wednesday man Matt Penney is expected to join Ipswich Town.

The report also ties Ipswich to a move for popular Czech Salford City goalkeeper Václav Hladký.

The Tractor Boys, recently bought out by ambitious American owners and managed by Paul Cook, who was once linked on Wednesday, have made a handful of signings that raise eyebrows in what has already been a drastic overhaul of the team.

Cook’s men are expected to be one of the favorites for promotion to the third tier having already added Lee Evans, Rekeem Harper, Wes Burns and Macauley Bonne to their squad.

There is work to be done, however, with the club having released 19 senior players, and Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton has made it clear that the club will pursue their ambition in the weeks to come.
