England beat Germany 2-0 at Wembley to reserve their place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
Second-half goals from Raheem Sterling and skipper Harry Kane were enough for Gareth Southgate’s men to advance to the final eight. where they will face Ukraine.
It wasn’t all easy for the home side – but fans could have been forgiven for thinking it was their night when Thomas Muller missed a golden opportunity to equalize in the 81st minute.
The German veteran – who scored twice against England on their 2010 World Cup exit – was scored on goal and inexplicably dragged aside.
Five minutes later, Kane stepped forward to nod at point blank range to seal the victory.
The captain said of the result: “An incredible day – an incredible game.
“Hearing Wembley like that was just a moment none of us will forget.
“It was an incredible performance, two to zero, another clean sheet… just the perfect afternoon.”
Asked about his first goal of the tournament, he added: “Massive. As a forward you just have to be ready for the next chance.
“Jack (Grealish) made a great cross and I was able to do it.”
After the final whistle Sterling said: “We had to do a performance against a very good team and I thought we did today.
“Scoring for your country is always special – so it’s a very special time for me.
“It was a great team performance all around.”
The victory was all the sweeter for manager Gareth Southgate, who missed a crucial penalty in the semi-finals of Euro 96 …
