The new Renault 5 electric city car will cost around £ 18,500 Car News

Renault has not yet confirmed the release date of the production version of the Concept 5 or the full technical specifications.

The showcase features wider rear wheel arches and a red striped livery reminiscent of the R5 Turbo hot hatch, hinting at the prospect of a high-performance version of the new model.

Beyond the commitment to launch seven new electric vehicles in the world by 2025, no timetable has been given for the launch of production of the 5 electric vehicles. Described as a city car, the model could replace the hugely popular Zoe EV as the company’s compact power hatch, and likely to be replaced around this time.

Renault unveiled the Mégane eVision last year, an electric SUV that will go into production next year as the first car built on the CMF-EV platform.

The history of the Renault 5

The original Renault 5 was launched in 1972, designed to bridge the significant gap between the Renault 4 and the Citroën 2CV in the French small car market. Renault engineers were given a mandate to develop a small car that would meet the needs of the widest possible audience of French car buyers.

The final design stayed close to the original sketches by designer Michel Boue, with a slightly unconventional design. Underneath the body, the R5 used many mechanics from the Renault 4 and Renault 6 and featured front-wheel drive with a choice of two engines.
