Police called to report a party at The Level in Brighton Brighton News

POLICE officers were called to report a party in a downtown park.

Officers attended The Level in Brighton where a large number of people had gathered.

Dozens of young people gathered in the green space last night, breaking the rules of Covid-19.

Witnesses report seeing musical equipment at the scene, including drums and microphones.

Uniformed officers arrived quickly with at least four police vehicles present.

People were quickly moved from the park by Sussex Police officers.

It is currently unclear whether any arrests have been made or whether anyone has been fined.

Most restrictions on outside dating have been lifted as part of the easing of Covid’s lockdown rules.

However, gatherings should not exceed 30 people unless they are legally exempted.

The party comes about a week after a massive illegal rave in Steyning that drew up to 2,000 people.

The rave sparked one of the largest and most unforeseen operations in Sussex Police history, with dozens of arrests.

Covid rates in Brighton are currently among the highest in the South East, as the number of people infected has increased by more than 50% in a week.

In the seven days leading up to June 17, there were 334 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Brighton and Hove – a 54% increase from the previous week.

It equates to a weekly rate of 114.8 per 100,000 population – higher than the South East rate of 57.5 per 100,000 and the English rate of 98.4 per 100,000.

While figures from Public Health England show that 551 cases of the Delta variant – first identified in India – had been recorded in the city on June 23.

However, the latest NHS data shows that nearly half of the residents of Brighton and Hove have received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

The race is on between the Covid-19 vaccine and a third wave of the virus, government advisers have said.
