Sheffield attends first-ever ‘Thank You Day’ to celebrate heroes of Covid UK News

Sheffield celebrates the first day of Thanksgiving on 4th July

The celebration came after hundreds of thousands of people called for a national ‘thank you’ day to thank local communities in the face of the Covid-19 crisis.

Now that England appears poised to “get back to normal” with the remaining restrictions lifted on July 19, the campaign aimed to encourage people across the country to be creative in joining the national celebration.

In Sheffield, City Council joined with local businesses and residents across the city to thank the people of Sheffield in a short video.

The downtown area was also decorated with thank you messages over the weekend, calling on residents to join and get involved through the Thank You Day website.

Councilor Terry Fox, Head of Sheffield City Council, said: “As we look forward to taking advantage of an easing of restrictions this summer, it is important that we reflect on what we overcame last year.

“So a day to say ‘thank you’ to those in our local communities who have helped us through the crisis has come at the perfect time.

“There are so many people I would like to thank, but I will begin by thanking the thousands of frontline workers and volunteers who have stepped out into the community to provide essential services to keep our city running and to ensure the safety of our most vulnerable residents. “

On Twitter, #ThankYouDay received thousands of mentions from people across the country as they thanked unsung heroes from all walks of life, including the NHS, for their immense contribution and sacrifice in the face of adversity.

UK Prime Minister @ 10DowningStreet tweeted: This #ThankYouDay we thank everyone who has gone above and beyond to help others throughout the pandemic. Thank you!”

NHS England and NHS Improvement who tweeted via @NHSEngland said: ‘We all have someone to thank this year.

“Today is the national #ThankYouDay – a chance to thank everyone who deserves it, together. Before #NHSBirthday, we thank all of the #NosNHSPeople for their incredible work over the past year.”

A Protect the Medics @PTMCharity charity also thanked all NHS staff for all they do.

Sheffield Councilor Jayne Dunn, who is also a member of the Education, Children and Families executive, expressed her gratitude and appreciation on the thank you day.

She said: “To all the social workers, family support workers, teachers, principals, support staff, early childhood staff, childminders, governors of Sheffield, thank you for working tirelessly to ensure safety , the happiness and education of our children. “

According to a new survey from ICM Unlimited, 16.3 million Britons were expected to join events in their local communities, making the day the largest mass participation event since the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Despite being launched just a month ago, the campaign has garnered tremendous support from hundreds of organizations ranging from the NHS to Boy Scouts and prominent figures including Gary Lineker, Michael Sheen, Dame Judi Dench, Raheem Sterling and many more.
