Boris Johnson will lead a press conference in Downing Street today (July 5) where he is expected to announce that the fourth step in the government’s roadmap to get out of lockdown will unfold.
The Prime Minister will address the nation two weeks ahead of the postponed July 19 date when all coronavirus restrictions and lockdowns will end.
The press conference is said to take place at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on BBC One and all major news channels such as Sky New and YouTube. It will also be streamed directly to Twitter.
On Sunday, Cabinet ministers appeared to set the stage for an easing of measures, with Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick telling the BBC the government could ‘roll back’ the restrictions due to the impact of vaccines on reducing serious diseases of Covid-19.
Johnson will brief the nation on the future of the meter-plus rule in hospitality settings, the use of face coverings and working from home, with multiple reports suggesting they will all be removed.
Here is what the Prime Minister is likely to say.
“Freedom Day”
The easing of lockdown restrictions on July 19, dubbed Freedom Day, is expected to be confirmed when Mr Johnson addresses the nation.
He will tell the public the country must “start learning to live with this virus” in the clearest indication yet that it is preparing to remove a series of restrictions on daily living.
Johnson will brief the nation on the future of the meter-plus rule in hospitality settings, the use of face coverings and working from home, with multiple reports suggesting they will all be removed.
It has been suggested that starting with the so-called ‘Freedom Day’ on July 19, mask wearing would become voluntary, while social distancing in pubs and bars would end – along with the need to use a QR code to check in – meaning a return to drinking at the bar with no table service requirement.
Mass events, including festivals, would also be allowed as part of the proposals for the final leg of the lockdown exit roadmap.
“Learning to live with the virus”
The Prime Minister is expected to say: “Thanks to the successful deployment of our immunization program, we are progressing cautiously on our roadmap.
“Today we are going to explain how we can restore people’s freedoms when we reach stage 4.
“But I must stress that the pandemic is not over and that cases will continue to increase over the coming weeks.
“As we begin to learn to live with this virus, we all need to continue to carefully manage the risks of Covid and use good judgment in our lives. ”

Officials said the Prime Minister would provide an update on care home visits, while urging those who did not to accept the offer of a vaccine, 86% of people in the UK. Uni having received at least one dose so far.
Coronavirus Update
The Prime Minister will undoubtedly provide an update on coronavirus cases ahead of the proposed easing of restrictions in two weeks.
The latest government figures show as of 9 a.m. on Sunday there had been 24,248 more laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 cases in the UK – up 66% last week.
However, another 15 people were recorded to have died within 28 days of testing positive, official figures said on Sunday, indicating that vaccines protect against coronavirus-related deaths, with mortality down 1.6% in over the past seven days.
