Sainsbury’s has announced that it will no longer sell CDs and DVDs as shoppers increasingly move online to purchase multimedia products.
The supermarket chain has said it wants to free up more space for food and other products.
A spokesperson said: “Our customers are going online more and more for entertainment, so earlier this year we made the decision to phase out the sale of DVDs and CDs, so that we can spend more money. space for food and popular products like clothing and housewares. “
The change will take place both in stores and on the Sainsbury’s website.
Streaming services now account for around four-fifths of music consumption.
Official Charts said this week that the UK’s most popular album so far this year – Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour – has seen 79% of its total sales come from streaming equivalents, with just 18% of CDs and cassettes. The remaining 3 percent came from downloads.
However, some forms of physical media are still popular. Sales of vinyl records jumped to 5 million in 2020, while even cassettes saw an increase.
