England are “here to win” in the Euro 2020 final and “want to go and take the trophy home,” manager Gareth Southgate said.
On the eve of the historic Three Lions clash with Italy, Southgate said his side were ready and insisted it would be “just a normal game day”.
Speaking at a press conference alongside his captain Harry Kane, the England manager said: “We are in the final and we are here to win.”
“Everything is important, the way we have represented people and we are delighted that the legacy is here, but now we want to take the trophy home for everyone,” he added.
Southgate said the Italian team have “fantastic players all round” and “are on an incredible run” – but England “have their own strengths”.
Kane praised Italy’s center-backs Giorgio Chiellini and Leonard Bonucci and said he relished the challenge of facing them.
“They are two incredible defenders,” he said. “They’ve had a lot of experience in big games in their careers. I want to play against the best center-backs in the world and those two are definitely up there.”
“But it’s not about me,” he said. “The game is about England vs Italy and we have a lot of confidence in the team. We have a lot of strength in the team and a lot can happen in a final and we have to make sure that we are on the safe side. “
Italian captain Chiellini was also laudatory about Kane and said he looked forward to a “difficult, but exciting battle” with the England captain.
